I've fallen in love with mug rugs recently, and decided that I wanted to make Halloween mug rugs with pockets for a spoon and tea bag... or candy!
I bought this Halloween bundle on sale a few months ago. I decided to use the orange cat fabric, the black BOO! fabrics, and the black witch's hat and boots fabric.
I stitched along the top of each wing (with right sides together) because each wing will serve as a pocket. I had to remember not to sew down the top of the wings when I zigzag stitched them onto the front of the owls.
For these mug rugs, I used low loft quilt batting, and I attempted to do some quilting on the back of the mug rugs. I just used black fabric for the backs.
I stitched the front and back of the mug rugs together with right sides together and left about an inch open to flip them. (I also trimmed around the edges and went around the corners with my pinking shears.) After I turned them over to the right sides through the hole, I stitched around the edges to finish them off.
Now, I'm ready to share some tea, coffee, hot cocoa, or witch's brew with a friend.
The owls' wings are perfect for holding candy, too!
I'm using my mug rug for my pumpkin spice coffee and pumpkin cheesecake cookie. Yum!
