Welcome to the April Pinterest Challenge! The purpose of this Pinterest Challenge is to motivate us to not just pin, but to make it happen! Since April is Earth Month, so for this month's challenge, we're sharing upcycled/eco-friendly crafts. Whenever I think of upcycling, I think of denim. I love creating with denim, and I've wanted to create a denim and crochet scarf for a while. So I searched for ideas, and I was inspired by Pin of an upcycled denim and crochet scarf.
SUPPLIES:
denim/old jeans
For this scarf, I used denim from 2 pairs of my sons size 6 jeans and Red Heart Soft Off White yarn. I used the crochet pattern for the Farfallina Scarf as a guide, but I also made modifications to incorporate the denim.
I cut several denim squares. I thought I would be cool to have squares with the belt loops and pockets from the jeans. I used my skip stitch rotary cutter to cut holes around the denim squares, so I could crochet into the holes.
I crocheted granny squares for the granny square sections of the scarf.
At first, I thought it would be cool to have randomly place the denim squares, but...
...later on, I decided to alternate the denim and crochet squares. I connected them using the join as you go method, which I love.
I crocheted the other sections of the scarf. This stitch is pretty fun!
I ran out of yarn, so I made a quick dash to Michael's. Thankfully they had 1 skein left of this yarn.
This stitch works up really fast.
Here's the middle section of the scarf.
I added denim and yarn fringe to each end of the scarf and cut it even.

DeleteThis is stunning! I am in love! I have wanted to do something similar to this for many years, but have often wondered the fabric would fray and pull apart where the skip stitch blade was run, so I haven't ventured into trying it - did you have any issues with that? I also really like how you've just kept it cream all the way with the pops of the blue.

Thank you! I didn't have nay issues with the holes fraying where I used the skip stitch blade, but the fringe frays. But I think there's some anti-fray stuff I can put on it. I'll have to find some.

DeleteT'onna I LOVE your Denim and Crochet Scarf. Seriously LOVE it. I never thought of working with denim like this before with my crochet but it looks fabulous and now I want to try it too. I wonder if you used pinking sheers (I know they give a zigzag cut though) if that would help with the fringe fray? I am not sure but my Nana always praised those pinking sheers for cutting fabrics so they didn't fray.
