I love crafting with denim, so whenever it's time for an upcycle challenge, I round up all the old jeans I can find and get to cutting and sewing! There are just so many things you can create with old jeans. For the March Upcycle Challenge Blog Hop, I decided to create a frayed denim scarf using several pairs of jeans that my kiddos have outgrown. Kids grow so fast, so they're always outgrowing their clothes. I usually donate their clothes, but I like to hang on to the jeans for projects like this one.
SUPPLIES:
denim (old jeans)
fabric glue (Aleene's Quick Dry Fabric Fusion)
I gathered up all the old jeans that my kiddos have outgrown and put them in a basket.
After sorting through the jeans and grouping them together by similar color, I cut them and decided to use these pieces as the base/back of the scarf.
I zigzag stitched them together, and the three pieces sewn together are about 70 inches long.
I cut strips of different shades of denim and frayed them.
Watch this video to see an easy way to fray denim.
At first, I pinned the frayed strips to base of the scarf...
But I got tired of pinning and just glued them in place with Aleene's Quick Dry Fabric Fusion.
After I glued all the strips onto the scarf, I went to bed and allowed the glue to dry overnight.
The next day I sewed the strips down to really secure them onto the scarf. Even with the fabric glue, some of the edges were lifting up.
I frayed the bottom edges of the scarf.
I had considered using only one shade of denim, but I really like it with the four shades of denim.
This scarf is about 70 inches long and 10 inches wide.
This scarf was fun to make, and since it's still cold here, I may be able to wear it a few times before Spring!
