Here in Washington state, you either need to bring your own bag(s) to the store when you go shopping, or you'll be charged for each bag the cashier uses for your purchases. While I have a couple large reusable bags that I've bought from Michael's and Joann, I usually forget to take them with me, especially when I go to Wal-Mart, and I always buy a bunch of stuff at Wal-Mart. So in addition to my purchases, I also end up buying a few plastic bags. But I'm trying to get better at remembering to take my reusable bags. My mom suggested that I keep them in my vehicle. I have some in the garage near my vehicle, and I still forget to grab them! Anyhoo, I thought it would be cool to crochet a shopping bag, and while searching Pinterest, I found a pin for a Simple and Useful Crochet Plastic Bag Pattern. I also thought this would be the perfect project to share for the July Sustainable Pinterest Challenge since this month's theme is Reduce Single Use.
For this project, I searched through my yarn stash and found a couple skeins of Caron Cotton Cakes Boho Floral. I grabbed my 3.75 Furls crochet hook and crocheted along with the YouTube video that's included with the pattern on the blog.
The pattern works up really fast.
After crocheting the body of the bag, I crocheted the handles following the instructions in the pattern.
I made sure the handle pieces ended with the same color, so when I stitched it together, the colors would match up, and the joining stitches wouldn't show.
I originally joined the sides with white yarn, but I realized the stiches show through when turned the right way....
...so I removed the white yarn and used the matching yarns to join the sides.
Then I turned the bag right side out.
Since this is an origami style bag, the sides are tucked in.
I stitched a short section of the handles together.
And the bag is all done!
Since this bag is like a crochet version of plastic grocery bags, I wanted to see if it could hold some cereal boxes. 😆
It would be a cute bag for going yarn shopping...

DeleteLove it! Your bag is so pretty, that yarn is gorgeous. We've have a charge here too for a while now so I'm pretty good at remembering my bags 80% of the time. I keep a few in the car, a small fold up one in my handbag and we have a few hanging by the door in the hopes we will all remember!

DeleteI have trouble remembering my bags, too. I have one folded up into a triangle that I keep in my purse. The rest I keep in my car. At the least I can bag my items when I get them to the car!
