Crochet Tabby Cat

Welcome to the March Sustainable Craft Challenge Blog Hop! The purpose of the Sustainable Craft Challenge Blog Hop (hosted by Julie @ Sum of Their Stories) is to create a sustainable/eco-friendly craft project. This month's theme is Soft, so I decided to crochet a tabby cat using really soft chenille yarn. Both of my kiddos like stuffed animals, especially cats, and sometimes instead of buying stuffed animals, I'll make them. I have noticed that my children (especially my daughter) are kinda rough with their stuffed animals. Sometimes the same day they get their new stuffed friend, they'll come to me asking me to fix a hole in it. Like, already!? But I've found that the stuffed animals I crochet for them, don't end up with holes or other injuries. 😁 I'm not sure if it's because I take extra care to ensure that the toy is very sturdy or if my kids are a little gentler with the toy because they know Mommy made it. 🤷

SUPPLIES:
I used Premier Just Chenille Cocoa Brown and Premier Just Chenille Black yarn to crochet the brown tabby cat. He kinda looks like a tiger, but okay. 😁🐯

I ended up crocheting with two strands at the same time to make the project thicker and larger. When crocheting with one strand of the chenille yarn, the project was smaller than it should be. This project is crocheted in the round, so a cute stitch marker is absolutely necessary.

I decided to add green safety eyes.

When stuffing small projects, I like to use scrap yarn as a way of using up small bits of yarn and creating less waste. I keep a Rae Dunn jar on my desk for saving yarn scraps.

I crocheted the head closed with a small amount of Premier Just Chenille White yarn.

Next, I crocheted the body.

I added the ears, nose, and mouth with black yarn.

The kitty now has a body, arms, legs, and a tail. I crocheted all this with only the brown yarn. I attempted to create stripes by alternating the brown and black yarn, but I didn't like how it looked.

I used a size 5mm crochet hook to top stitch some black stripes.

At first, I was only going to add stripes to the back of the kitty, but then I felt like it wasn't "tabby enough."

So, I decided to add black stripes to the arms and to the tops of the feet.

Now, he's having a great time playing with some balls of yarn.

Thanks so much for stopping by to check out my Crochet Tabby Cat! I hope you'll visit the other participant's soft, eco-friendly creations below! ↓

    1. Thanks so much, Niki!!! I really hope they do keep some of my creations and pass them down to their own kids. I still have a doll that my grandmother gave me when I was 7, and it means a lot to me to still have something from my grandmother.
