Welcome to the November Sustainable Craft Challenge Blog Hop. This month's theme is Christmas, so I decided to crochet a Christmas ornament using yarn from my stash. For several years, we've had a Seattle Seahawks themed Christmas tree, and I think we're going to continue that tradition. So, I decided that my new ornament must be crocheted in Seahawks colors, dark blue and green.
SUPPLIES:
Little Winter Star pattern (free on Ravelry by CatsWhiskers Crochet)
beads
I have several balls of yarn from past projects stashed away all over my craft room. These are on top of my yarn shelf. I searched through these scrap yarn balls for dark blue and green yarn for this project.
Once I found the yarn I wanted to use, I put it in this handy little basket. I thought about making another ornament with silver yarn. I still might make another.
I followed the Little Winter Star pattern (free on Ravelry) to crochet both sides of the ornament.
Then, I crocheted the two sides together with green yarn.
Next, I grabbed some yarn scraps from my scrap jar, and I stuffed the ornament with the scraps before stitching it closed.
Stuffing!
After I stitched the ornament closed, I made a tassel using my tassel maker.
I decided that I wanted to embellish the ornament with some beads, so I searched my bead stash for some silver and green beads.
I've had this bracelet for many many years and no longer wear it, so I decided that I wanted to add the silver beads from this bracelet to my ornament.
I removed the silver beads from the bracelet and sewed them onto the corners of the ornament.
Now, back to that tassel... I added a couple beads before attaching the tassel. I added a round green bead and an S shaped bead to tassel. S is for Seahawks!
I added another S bead to the center of the ornament.
I found these earrings in my bead stash, and I used the light green beads to embellish the hanging loop on the ornament.
I used green embroidery thread to create a loop to hang the ornament. I added the two light green beads and another S bead to the loop before attaching it to the ornament.
I really like the green beads.
Here's a closeup of the body of the ornament.
Since it was just Halloween the other day, I haven't put my Christmas tree up, so I don't have anywhere to hang the ornament yet. I'll share updated photos of the ornament on my tree once I get it all set up. I usually put my tree up the day before Thanksgiving. When do you put up your Christmas tree???🎄
Thanks so much for stopping by to check out my Winter Star Ornament, which I'm sharing for the November Sustainable Craft Challenge Blog Hop! The purpose of the Sustainable Craft Challenge Blog Hop (hosted by Julie @ Sum of Their Stories) is to create a sustainable/eco-friendly craft project. This month's theme is Christmas, so I decided to crochet an ornament using yarn that was already in my yarn stash, and I made good use of some yarn scraps by using them to stuff the ornament. I also gave some beads from old jewelry a new purpose by using them to embellish the ornament. Anyhoo, I hope you'll visit the other participant's eco-friendly Christmas creations below! ↓

I really like the idea of a themed tree, I bet it looks amazing. These ornaments are lovely. I especially love that you stuffed them with all your yarn ends and upcycling old jewellery for the beads to decorate.
ReplyDeleteWe generally put our tree up the first weekend in December, but I have a friend who adores Christmas and I don't think it will be many days before she puts hers up!
Thank you!!! One of my neighbors put their tree up a few days ago. I could see it in tehri window. I kinda makes me want to put my up now, but I'm going to wait until the day before Thanksgiving... I think. lol
DeleteI love how you embellished your crocheted ornaments with parts of discarded jewelry. They'll look great on your Seahawk tree!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much!
DeleteI adore these! So sweet. I love the edging. It makes it pop more.
ReplyDeleteThank you!!
DeleteI love that your Christmas tree has a Seattle Seahawks theme! We are big college football fans. (I make have to break out some red and white.) Thank you for the wonderfully sustainable tip about using scraps as stuffing. -Marci @ Old Rock Farmhouse
ReplyDeleteRed and white are already great Christmas colors, so that tree would definitely look awesome! I keep thinking of trying a new theme, but I have so many Seahawks decorations, so I just keep that same theme. lol
